CHAPTER 37

“Damn every one of y’all to hell!” came a shrill voice from the front yard of Bryce Pitre’s house. “I can’t believe this shit is true! Y’all are all going to die!”

I hurried to the front of the house just in time to see my wife launch herself into the air and tackle a robust woman not twenty feet from the porch. While the woman looked very capable of handling herself, Susan was a former professional cage fighter, and there weren’t many women alive who could go toe-to-toe with her. Still, Melvin and I rushed to help her, and we bumped into each other as we tried to squeeze through the doorway. He reached Susan and the woman a step before I did, proving yet again that I was growing a little older and slower.

Instead of handcuffing the woman, Susan had put her in an arm lock and was speaking softly into her ear, trying to calm her down. It was clear that she had things under control, so Melvin and I just stood watching. I scanned the street to make sure the woman hadn’t brought help. Other than a few residents standing on their front porches staring wide-eyed in our direction, everything was calm.

“Y’all murdered my brother!” the woman was bellowing as she thrashed about on the ground, trying to get out from under my wife. “Y’all slaughtered him in cold blood! It’s all over Facebook! Y’all showed up with your damned machine guns and opened up on him! He never had a chance!”

At first, I didn’t think the woman could hear Susan over her own screams, but after about a full minute, she finally stopped yelling and her shoulders seemed to relax. I wasn’t sure if it was due to Susan’s coaxing, or if she had worn herself out, but I knew she was far from calm. Although she wasn’t screaming anymore, her back was rising and falling from her heavy breathing. It wouldn’t take much to set her off again.

“I’m gonna let you up now,” Susan said in a soft voice. “You can’t go inside the house because it’s a crime scene, but I’ll walk you to my Tahoe. Once we’re inside, I’ll answer every question you have.”

“You don’t want me to go inside because you’re trying to cover up what y’all did!” Her face was still buried in the ground, so her voice was muffled. “I know how the law operates!”

“No, ma’am,” Susan said calmly. “No one’s covering up anything. We’re preserving the scene so the sheriff’s office can come in and investigate the shooting. In fact, you can stay in my Tahoe until they get here, to make sure nothing goes in or out of the house.”

The woman twisted her head around and blinked up at Susan, as though confused.

“We don’t investigate ourselves,” Susan explained, loosening her hold on the woman’s arm. “We leave that to an outside agency. It’s best that way, so we can ensure fairness for everyone involved.”

The woman didn’t say a word.
